What is biochar?

Biochar is a climate-smart soil conditioner.

Facts about biochar

Biochar is created via a process known as pyrolysis, which means that dry organic material is broken down under oxygen-free conditions at between 350 and 1,000 degrees Celsius. The organic material can consist of residues, such as seeds and other crop residues from agriculture or waste, wood, algae and garden waste, etc.

Biochar can be produced from a wide range of organic products. Biochar is ideal for various microbes (microorganisms) which thrive in the cracks and cavities of the coal. It is also suitable for loading with added nutrition.

Several properties of the raw material remain in the biochar. If the raw material is porous with many large pores, such as wood, the carbon will also have many large pores and thus a high water-holding and nutrient-holding capacity.

EBC certified biochar

According to the European Biochar Certification Authority (EBC), biochar can only be produced in the ways described below. Visit the website of the European Biochar Certificate. EBC; european-biochar.org for further information.
